• Karen Conklin, Executive Director

    Karen has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Youngstown State University. She has been the presenter at extensive workshops and seminars and is the recipient of numerous leadership awards. Her distinguished career includes: Executive Director of the American Red Cross Lake to River, Executive Director of The Humane Society of Greater Akron, and Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts, Lake to River. Karen brings to The English Center her expert skills in business management, non-profit operations, marketing, and public relations. Karen has a passion for the mission of The English Center and is dedicated to providing a quality experience for all of our students.

  • Carolyn Leonard, Education Director/Teacher, Level 2 Class

    Carolyn is an award-winning teacher who has a Master’s Degree from YSU in Education and a Highly Qualified designation in English from the State of Ohio. She has over 30 years experience teaching English in a public school setting and has been a teacher at The English Center since 2015. Carolyn is skilled at adapting and implementing instruction to meet individual needs. Her expertise includes curriculum development as well as student assessment, evaluation, and placement. Carolyn believes that learning English should be fun and strives to create a welcoming and friendly classroom.

  • Claudia DeRhodes, Operations Assistant

    Claudia has a Business Degree from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. She was the owner of her own business before coming to The United States fifteen years ago. Claudia originally came to TEC as a student and took classes with us for several years. She is now an invaluable member of our staff. Claudia is outgoing and friendly, and not only manages our office but skillfully assists students with all facets of program participation. Claudia is devoted to The English Center and excels in her capacity as a Student Liaison.

  • Tyler MacDonald, Teacher, Level 3 Class and Level 4 Class

    Tyler is an experienced, student-centered teacher with a master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from Kent State and a bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from YSU. Tyler has many years of experience working with adult ESL students, which includes teaching in Ohio and NYC. Her expertise includes curriculum development, speaking and conversation skills, and implementing technology in the classroom. She has been working at The English Center since 2021. Tyler is adept at establishing rapport with students and works hard to create a friendly, positive, and welcoming classroom culture.

  • Carly Carcelli, Teacher, Level 1 Class

    Carly has a Master’s Degree in English and graduate certificates in the teaching of writing and literature. She specializes in grammar topics and has a strong linguistics background. Carly’s experience includes teaching English at several colleges as well as at Youngstown State University. Carly is new to The English Center and is excited to work with students beginning to learn the English language. Carly works to ensure her classroom is welcoming and warm and strives to meet students’ needs so they can excel in their education.

  • Vasiliki Constantine, Outreach Teacher

    Vasiliki has a Master’s Degree with an emphasis in Bilingual Bicultural Education from the University of Maryland. She is an experienced English Language teacher having taught in several states as well as in Athens, Greece. Vasiliki has been with The English Center since 2012 and is skilled in program and curriculum development. She has vast experience in helping immigrant families acclimate to their community. Vasiliki welcomes her students with patience and enthusiasm and focuses on encouraging student growth and confidence.

  • Shannon Hodge, Teacher, Community Partner Programs

    Shannon has a Master’s degree in English and a TESOL certification from Youngstown State University. She has a strong teaching background, spending many years at YSU as an English Professor and as an ESL Specialist at the English Language Institute. Shannon’s expertise is in developing communication skills through speaking, conversation and writing. Her patience, energy and quality feedback create a warm and welcoming environment in the classroom where students enjoy learning and further develop their skills with confidence. Shannon is new at The English Center and is very excited to join our team of teachers.
